The Market was started in June 2006 and founded by Brenda Langton, chef/owner of Spoonriver Restaurant & Cafe Brenda.
Our mission is to promote local, sustainable and organic agriculture, increasing economic opportunities for farmers, urban youth, small businesses and food artisans. To offer experiential learning about and access to healthy local foods, and build a vibrant gathering place for Minneapolis residents and visitors.
The Mill City Farmers Market is unique in the Midwest. Its beautiful location, focus on creating economic opportunities for small farmers and entrepreneurs and its distinctive, educational and fun events have drawn both national and local acclaim.
MCFM has been compared by Food & Wine Magazine “to markets in Barcelona and Dublin” and also listed as one of the “100 Tastes to Try in 2007”. In 2006 the Star Tribune called it “Visionary”. In 2007 the Star Tribune ran two full pages in the Taste section touting the market and its vendors as “Not Run of the Mill”. With 3500-5500 visitors each week the market attracts a diverse audience from all over Minnesota as well as national and international visitors.
The MCFM brings together farmers, producers, food artisans, multi-cultural food traditions, celebrity chefs, cookbook authors, cooking demos, kids activities, farm animals, recipe contests, free food samples, festivals and live music to educate consumers about organic and sustainable agriculture and our regional farmers. We build connections and foster relationships between farmers and customers.
